How does it work and how will I benefit?

A solar PV system will generate electricity you can use in your home. It usually requires very little maintenance during its lifetime as it silently converts the suns light into electricity. Depending on your energy usage, these long life, low maintenance systems could generate a significant proportion of your electricity needs, protecting you from rising energy prices and making you more self-sufficient.

With solar panel prices having fallen over the last year, solar PV is now broadly in line with many home improvements. If you haven't checked in a while you will be amazed at our offers.

All our domestic grid-connected systems are eligible for the FIT subsidy which is currently paid for 20 years and linked to RPI. The FiT rate is reviewed every 3 months to reflect the typical costs of installing solar and the amount of systems installed, to ensure the FiT budget provides value all round and keeps going for longer. Our Performance systems will have paid for themselves through savings and FiTs/export income well within 10 years.

We feel that installing solar provides real protection against rising energy costs for at least 25 years.

What is solar PV and how do solar panels work?

Solar PV or solar photovoltaic refers to technology that converts the suns light into electricity. In simple terms a solar PV cell works in the opposite way to an LED (which most people are familiar with). With an LED, electricity flow will cause light to be emitted. With a PV cell, absorbing light causes electricity to flow.

A solar PV panel holds many PV cells within a sealed and protected enclosure, ready for practical use. Installed on your roof, or freestanding in your garden, the solar panels will silently generate electricity for your home all day long and with no moving parts these passive systems require virtually no maintenance.

How much electricity do they generate? Will it be worthwhile?

How much electricity generated depends on the size of the installation and is measured in kWp (kilowatt peak). A 2kWp system could be installed on an average terraced house and up to a 4kWp system on an average suburban house. According to the Governments Standard Assesment Procedure an optimum of 750kWh per kWp of installed solar PV can be expected annually, allowing for weather variation. This is based on Sheffield though, and we can expect a good 10% more output from a system in Cardiff. The European Commissions Joint Research Centre indicates over 850kWh/kWp annually for an optimal system.

There are a few different types of Solar PV system designed for different sites, conditions and requirements:

Roof mounted - Over roof system

This is the most common set up on sloping roofs of all kinds, domestic or commercial. It is usually the most economic way of installing and can be used for almost any pitched roof.

Roof mounted - Roof Integrated System

Almost a must for new roofs or new builds that have appropriate southerly aspect. Roof integrated PV can be quickly installed and will save on traditional roofing materials and labour.

Roof mounted - Flat Roof Array

Flat roof arrays are more common on commercial properties but can also be used domestically. Quite a large area is needed to avoid self-shading and planning permission is usually required.

Ground mounted - Flat Array

Similar to the flat roof array but ground mounted instead. Again a large area is need and so is planning permission for anything over 9 square metres.

Ground mounted - Pole Mounted Array

Pole mounted systems often track the sun too, greatly increasing output. Single axis trackers follow the sun each day, while dual axis trackers also tilt according to season and weather conditions. Planning permission would usually be required.

Understanding the Feed-in Tariff

Paid for every kWh generated

By generating clean energy you are helping the UK meet it's target CO2 emissions and receiving a subsidy in return. This is paid for all the electricity generated and recorded on your newly fitted generation meter. It does not matter whether you use this electricity or not as long as you are connected to the grid and your system has been installed and registered by an MCS accredited installer - Urban Solar.
The present rate is 16p per kWh of clean energy generated by your solar PV system. The rate will be reduced slightly every quarter but will not affect those already registered at a specific rate. You will stay on 16p (linked to RPI) for the 20 year duration of the scheme.

EPC of 'D' or above

You will need an Energy Performance Certificate of 'D' or above to obtain the higher rate of FiT. We will arrange this for you FREE if you do not have one. Properties with an EPC level below 'D' are still eligible for the lower FiT rate of 7.1p.

You will also save on your bills

Whenever you use your own electricity generated by your solar system you will be saving on your bills. The present average cost of electricity is around 14p per kWh unit in the UK which has nearly doubled in the last 10 years and is forecast to keep increasing by 5.6% per year according to DECC. That means most of us will be paying at least 24p per kWh in 10 years time.
Using half the electricity generated will make a substantial difference to your bills and go a long way to providing your own energy security for decades to come.

You will export some of your electricity too

Your energy provider will assume that you do use half the energy provided by your solar PV system and therefore 'deem' that half has been supplying the national grid. You will therefore also be paid 4.5p per kWh for half the electricity generated.

Solar benefits summary

Once you have had solar PV installed you will have a new generation meter. This will record all the electricity your system produces and it is this figure upon which all payments are based. Your energy provider will pay you the Feed-in Tariff for every kWh clocked up on your generation meter and also pay you the Export Tariff for half that generated amount. You will also make savings by using your own energy supply and become more independent in the process.
